3D printer nozzles

Discover nozzles of every kind for every 3D printer in our wide product range. A 3D printer’s nozzle is the tip of the hot end and is responsible for passing heated filament onto the build plate. The nozzle is a mechanical part that extrudes melted filament into layers. The most commonly used nozzles are brass nozzles with the favored standard diameter size of 0.4 mm. When it comes to selecting a nozzle, there are quite some features to consider like the nozzle diameter, nozzle material, nozzle length, and nozzle width.

Selecting 3D printer nozzles

A nozzle should be used for 3D printing based on its advantages. As you can see we offer a large range of nozzles in our selection, each with their own expertise and benefits. Choosing the right nozzle for your 3D model will significantly benefit the print quality and avoid any future clogging and damage. Visit our helpful guide to 3D filament to determine which nozzle will work best for which filament material.

Matching nozzle material to 3D filament materials

So when should you use a certain nozzle to print 3D filament? We will go over some of the best ways to pair your nozzle with certain 3D filament materials. There are many combinations between different types of nozzle materials and filament materials that perform well.

Brass nozzles

  • Cheaper than stainless steel nozzles
  • Do not work for 3D printing abrasive filament materials
  • Have better heat conductivity than stainless steel nozzles
  • Great for 3D printing standard filament materials like PLA filament

Copper nozzles

  • Superior thermal conductivity
  • Softer than brass and less wear-resistant
  • Works for the majority of 3D filament materials
  • Do not work for abrasive filament materials
  • Best choice for 3D printing industrial-grade filaments like PEEK and PEI

Stainless nozzles

  • Softer than hardened steel nozzles
  • Works for the majority of 3D filament materials
  • Harder than brass nozzles and handles wear better
  • For abrasive filaments, upgrade to a hardened steel nozzle

Hardened steel nozzles

  • Affordable nozzle that prints abrasive and corrosive materials
  • Highly wear-resistant and does not need frequent replacement
  • For prolonged 3D printing of advanced filaments at extreme temperatures, upgrade to a ruby nozzle

Ruby tip nozzles

  • Does not require replacement
  • Second hardest material on earth
  • Ultimate nozzle for 3D printing abrasive filament materials like carbon fiber filament
  • Phenomenal heat conductivity; great for industrial-grade filament materials such as PPSU filament

Read more about the nozzle materials we offer in their respective sections for more in-depth information and recommendations. Please do consider that there are also different variations of nozzle materials, for example, extra hardened coating like the X-steel nozzle, and more!

3D printer nozzle size

A smaller diameter-sized nozzle can largely benefit a 3D model as smaller nozzles tend to produce prints at a higher resolution. This is also useful for makers who would like to achieve small layer heights. Do take into account that with a smaller layer height, the longer the 3D printing will take. In some cases, more abrasive filaments or filament with fibers like metal-filled and wood-filled filament can prove to print tricky when the diameter is very small. A larger diameter size for a nozzle means more material can be extruded onto the print surface. This cuts down printing time and is also known to produce parts that are more compact and strong, by using fewer layers.

One of the most important factors of a nozzle is the thread length and type. Select a nozzle with a thread type that will be compatible with your 3D printer. A wrong thread type would mean that the nozzle simply cannot be screwed into place. Furthermore, choose a thread length that will fit and not stick out of your heater block too far. The most common thread type is the MK8 nozzle that will work with the majority of 3D printers.

In the table below we have listed some 3D brands and their compatibility with nozzle types. The nozzle types have been listed depending on the most used nozzle types by the brand's 3D printer models. Do take into account that some specific brands or 3D printer series have non-generic nozzles. This means that only the particular nozzle type of that 3D printer’s model is compatible. Please always check which model you currently have. And if you have any questions about matching nozzles, let us know!

When do you replace a 3D printer’s nozzle?

A nozzle must be replaced when it is clearly worn down or if you happen to notice that your 3D models just don’t have the same quality as they used to have. When cleaning and maintenance no longer solve this, there is only one thing left to do: replace your 3D printer’s nozzle. There is no set time period for changing your nozzle, and this can fluctuate depending on what you print and how often. We advise that you keep your nozzle clean with cleaning filament and nozzle cleaners. Inspect your nozzle frequently to make sure that your prints look as neat and spectacular as they should!

Frequently asked questions

What nozzle should I use for PLA filament?

The ideal nozzle to 3D print standard PLA filament is a brass nozzle. Every nozzle material can print PLA however, brass is cost-effective and works perfectly for PLA filament. Select a brass nozzle size based on the level of detail you would like your 3D models to have.

What nozzle should I use for PETG filament?

The best nozzle material to use for PETG filament is a brass nozzle. They work perfectly for standard filament materials. Choose a brass nozzle input diameter size that will compliment your 3D models. With a smaller diameter size, you can achieve highly detailed 3D models whereas a larger diameter size means faster printing of larger objects.

What nozzle should I use for ABS filament?

To successfully print ABS filament, use a brass nozzle. The standard size for brass nozzles is 0.4 mm however, there are multiple sizes of brass nozzles that you can choose from. Select a brass nozzle size that you prefer to 3D print with. A larger input diameter size allows finer extrusion in smaller layers whereas larger input sizes will create large layers that are strong and compact in less time.

How do you fix a clogged nozzle?

There are many ways to unclog your 3D printer’s nozzle. One way is to perform hot and cold pulls using cleaning filament. With a metal nozzle cleaner, you can also unlodge and remove material buildup in a 3D printer’s nozzle. If you have been 3D printing with ABS filament, you can dissolve any stuck material using acetone.

What nozzle does my 3D printer need?

The kind of nozzle you require will depend on the type of 3D printer you have. Most 3D printers use MK8 nozzles except for some Creality 3D printers that use M6x.75 type nozzles. Please take into account that dome 3D printers have specialized nozzles that only fit a certain model.

How can I fix a leaking nozzle?

If you have a PTFE tube that is not properly connected to the nozzle top, it can leak through. If you are not using a PTFE liner, there may be a gap between the heat break and the nozzle. To fix the gap for your PTFE tube, cut the end of the Bowden tube to a straight cut. Without PTFE tubing, heat up the hot end to 180°C, tighten the nozzle, heat to 210°C and tighten, back to 180°C and tighten, to 250°C and tighten. This should seal it.
